Urolithin A prevents age-related cognitive decline only when started early, study finds

Urolithin A, a compound produced by gut bacteria from pomegranate polyphenols, has generated excitement as a potential anti-aging intervention. This new study reveals a critical caveat: timing is everything. Researchers found that early activation of mitophagy (the cellular cleanup of damaged mitochondria) with urolithin A successfully prevented age-related cognitive impairment in mice. However, when treatment began after cognitive decline was already established, urolithin A failed to reverse the damage. This suggests a preventive rather than therapeutic role for the compound. The findings align with emerging evidence that many aging interventions work best when started before significant damage accumulates—the biological equivalent of maintaining a car rather than repairing it after breakdown. For humans already taking urolithin A supplements (or eating pomegranates), this underscores the importance of early intervention and managing expectations. The study also highlights that mitochondrial dysfunction in brain aging may reach a point of no return, where simply clearing damaged mitochondria isn't enough to restore function. More research is needed to determine the optimal window for intervention in humans.
