Targeting Estrogen-Related Receptors Counters Sarcopenia in Naturally Aged Mice

Researchers have identified estrogen-related receptor (ERR) signaling as a promising target for combating sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function that affects mobility and healthspan. In naturally aged mice, boosting ERR activity preserved both muscle mass and exercise performance compared to untreated controls. This is particularly noteworthy because ERRs regulate mitochondrial function and energy metabolism in muscle cells without being traditional estrogen receptors, potentially avoiding the side effects of hormone replacement therapy. The findings suggest a novel pharmacological approach to maintaining muscle health during aging. However, this remains a mouse study, and the pathway's relevance to human sarcopenia needs confirmation through clinical trials. If translatable, ERR modulators could offer a targeted intervention for one of aging's most debilitating conditions, helping older adults maintain independence and physical function. The research adds to growing evidence that metabolic signaling pathways, rather than just protein synthesis, may be key therapeutic targets for age-related muscle decline.
