Resolvin E1 boosts aged muscle regeneration by resolving inflammation

pubmed· Geroscience· October 7, 2026· original source ↗· abstract only

Researchers found that Resolvin E1, a naturally occurring molecule that helps shut down inflammation, can improve muscle regeneration in aged animals. As we age, skeletal muscle increasingly struggles to repair itself after injury, partly because chronic low-grade inflammation interferes with the muscle stem cells responsible for tissue repair. This study in GeroScience demonstrates that administering Resolvin E1 during the recovery process actively resolves inflammation rather than simply blocking it, creating a better environment for muscle stem cells (satellite cells) to do their job. The finding matters because age-related muscle decline (sarcopenia) affects function, independence, and metabolic health in older adults. While this is animal research, Resolvin E1 and related molecules are already being studied in human trials for other conditions, suggesting a translatable path forward. The approach represents a shift from broadly suppressing inflammation to intelligently resolving it - potentially preserving the benefits of acute inflammatory responses while preventing their harmful persistence in aging tissues.
