Anti-inflammatory B cells in belly fat protect against aging insulin resistance

Researchers have identified a specific type of immune cell in visceral (belly) fat that appears to protect against metabolic aging. The study, published in Nature Communications, found that B cells expressing the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) accumulate in visceral adipose tissue and help maintain insulin sensitivity with age. In mouse models, these IL-10-producing B cells protected against the insulin resistance that typically develops with aging. When these cells were depleted, mice showed accelerated metabolic decline. Conversely, boosting these cells extended lifespan and improved metabolic health. This finding is significant because it reveals a previously unrecognized beneficial role for certain immune cells in fat tissue. Most research on visceral fat focuses on its harmful inflammatory effects, but this work shows that specific immune populations can actually combat aging-related metabolic dysfunction. The practical implication is substantial: these B cells could represent a new therapeutic target for preventing or reversing age-related insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The challenge will be developing interventions that selectively enhance these protective cells without broadly suppressing immunity. While this is mouse research, the finding opens promising avenues for human trials targeting this specific immune pathway.
